Why weren't you approved for the Neo product?

Understand why a Neo application might be declined and learn how to improve your chances for future approval.

Updated today

We know it's disappointing not to be approved. There are two points in the process where a decision can happen: before you apply and after a full review. Many reasons are temporary, and your situation may change over time.

Eligibility requirements for Neo products

Before you enter a full application, we check a set of eligibility requirements. If you don't meet them at this stage, you won't proceed to a full application.

Here's a breakdown of what can affect your eligibility at this stage:

Time-based

You may be eligible again after a waiting period.

  • A credit application was recently declined — you can reapply after 30 days

  • You recently opened a Neo Secured credit card — you can reapply after 3 months

  • You recently opened a Neo Unsecured credit card — you can reapply after 6 months

  • You recently swapped your card — you can reapply after 30 days

Account status

Resolve the issue to reapply.

  • You already have an open or in-progress application

  • Your Neo credit account is delinquent

  • Your card is pending reissuance

Once the issue is resolved, you can apply again.

Account limits

No further action possible for this product.

  • You already hold a card of the same brand, tier, and offer

  • You've reached the active or lifetime limit for Neo Savings or Neo Everyday accounts

Location or age

  • You must be the age of majority in your province or territory

  • You must be a Canadian resident

You weren't approved after applying

Even if you met the eligibility requirements, you may not be approved once we review your full application. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as factors in your credit history (for example, a previous bankruptcy or collections), identity or verification issues, or security checks we're unable to complete.

Common reasons why applications aren't approved include:

  • You didn't use a valid ID document when verifying your identity. We'll reach out to you and request a valid ID document.

  • You used a VPN during the application. Contact us to restart your application and turn off your VPN when applying.

  • You have more than one Neo account.

  • You didn't use a valid Canadian SIN (needed for accounts that earn you interest).

  • You inputted incorrect information in your application (such as the wrong date of birth). Chat with us to restart your application.

We're not able to share specific details about the outcome of an application review.

What can I do if I wasn’t approved?

If you weren’t approved, your next steps depend on the reason:

  • Time-based restriction: Check back once the waiting period has passed. See the timelines above.

  • Account status issue: Resolve the issue, then you can apply again.

  • Credit history or verification issues: Some things can improve over time. You can check your credit report for free at Equifax or TransUnion to spot any errors. If you weren't approved for a standard credit card, getting a secured credit card can help you build your credit history.

  • Not sure of the reason: Contact our support team and we'll do our best to help.

For a full list of eligibility requirements, see Eligibility requirements for the Neo products.

What should I do if I made a mistake on my application?

If you have made a mistake on your application, your application may not be approved. Chat with us to see if you can reapply.

Can I reapply after my Neo product application wasn't approved?

You’re encouraged to wait ‌a few months before you reapply for a credit card, but you’re welcome to apply for a different Neo product.
